The Harvard (also known as the T6, Texan or SNJ) was the most widely used fighter trainer in World War II, and served in an amazing 75 Air Forces, Navies, Marine Corps or Armies worldwide. Not only was it used for training thousands of pilots for combat in the front-line fighters of the day, it was a combat aircraft in its own right, with various combinations of guns, rockets and bombs available.
Over 15,000 were built in different counties, including the USA, Canada & South Africa, and a development of the Harvard was produced in Australia by the Commonwealth Aircraft Company, called the Wirraway. Harvards have seen combat action in numerous theatres of war, including Korea.
The TWA aircraft ‘099’ is an AT6D model, built by North American Aviation Inc. in 1943. She served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force as an advanced trainer in the War, before being retired to civilian ownership where her wonderful sight and sound has since been enjoyed by thousands of people at air shows in New Zealand and Australia. Her striking yellow livery and distinctive ‘099’ numeral date back to her military service in the RNZAF
Tasmanian Warbird Adventures was founded by ex-Royal Air Force fighter pilot Jethro Nelson, who served for almost most 20 years flying a variety of aircraft, including the Tornado GR4 and Hawk T1A.
During his service, he flew numerous operational missions over Iraq, as well as multi-national exercises in Europe, the Middle East, and North & South America. Jethro became a Qualified Flying Instructor, Air Combat Instructor, and Qualified Tactics Instructor on both Hawk & Tornado, and finished his RAF service as the Central Flying School (CFS) Chief Examiner for Tornado GR4.
His passion & enthusiasm for military flying and legendary aircraft like the Harvard can now be enjoyed by you as you take to the skies with Jethro as your pilot.
